I mentioned several times in the previous months I haven’t been feeling my best for a while. With three kids, a busy blog and a house to take care of, somewhere along the way I stopped taking care of myself.
I wasn’t eating right, and the weight was piling on.
That was upsetting, but even more upsetting was how I was feeling.
I was in a constant state of stress and anxiety. Life felt overwhelming, and my energy levels were suffering. I found myself reaching for caffeine and sweet treats to get me through the day, a habit that I had abandoned long ago.
Logically I know that I can’t be the best for my family if I’m not taking care of myself, but even so, it took some time for me to make a commitment to take action to start feeling better.
I have, and these are the five things I’ve done that have made a difference for me.
5 Secrets to Feel Better Now
1. Be Mindful of Intake
I hate the word diet, so let’s not use it ok?
Instead of focusing on a restrictive diet, I’m instead making an effort to pay attention to the source of my calories. I had fallen into the habit of mindless eating, usually in the source of a sweet drink or treat.
One thing that is helping me is Born Sweet Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener. It is a great way to enjoy my coffee or smoothie without blowing my calorie allowance.

I find myself using it throughout the day. I am a big fan of blended coffee, and with Born Sweet Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener I can make sure that it doesn’t turn into a 200 calorie coffee. I also am using it in my daily smoothie and night-time tea.
It is amazing how easy it is to make small changes! (And fun to see the numbers on the scale go down.)
2. Eat for Energy
You know that food is the gasoline that fuels your body, but still, many of us reach for things we are better off without. When you feed your body junk, you are going to feel like junk. According to Joy Bauer, R.D., NBC’s Today show nutritionist, to stay energized you need to feed your body meals that are a balance of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Energizing foods include oatmeal, almonds, beets, eggs, Greek yogurt, spinach, quinoa, apples, chickpeas, and bananas.
My focus is on pulling the empty calories from my diet, and instead focusing on ones that are nourishing. A diet that is too low in calories or packed with empty calories can also cause your energy levels to sag, so I’m trying to focus on balance.
Lately, I’m enjoying oatmeal with almonds and bananas for breakfast. I sprinkle on a little Born Sweet Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener, and I’ve got a delicious meal that leaves me satisfied.
When I’m feeling pressured and overwhelmed, slowing down is one of the hardest things in the world.
But it is exactly what I need.
Numerous studies indicate that meditation could help improve blood flow to the brain, and improve brain health. There are numerous free guided meditations that I find very helpful.
4. Get Moving
The last thing I wanted to do when I was feeling low was exercise. But it is true – it does give you energy.
The key: don’t overdo it. I’ve mentioned before that I can be prone to being extreme. Like the time I went from not working out for six months to starting P90x. Ramping up too quickly is such a mistake because not only does this leave you prone to giving up, it also leaves you exhausted.
A University of Georgia study found that low-intensity exercise can reduce fatigue by 65%. There is plenty of time for intense exercise, but your first week isn’t it!
If at all possible, get moving outside. Sunlight helps with your energy because it boosts the mood and curtails the sleep hormone melatonin. One of the best things you can do when you are feeling low is getting outside for a walk.
As hard as it is to get moving when your physical energy is low, it can be equally difficult to be grateful for what you do have when you are feeling overwhelmed. This is something I struggle with. When no one is helping with the housework, I’ve got deadlines coming out of my ears and Skye has been fussing all day, it is hard to sit down and write out what I’m grateful for.
But I make myself. Because it does make a difference.
By the way, an attitude of gratitude is helpful with a diet as well. Instead of focusing on what you can’t have focus on what you can have. Who needs that high-calorie drink when you can have tea with Born Sweet Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener?!
