Skye has a knack for getting into things.
I love my little gremlin, but wow.
She is a handful.
Yesterday I was distracted by the boy’s intense debate about what they were going to have for lunch. After refereeing their power struggle, I returned to find her “decorating” (her words) the master bathroom.
With paint. And glitter glue.
How she GOT to the paint and glitter glue, I don’t know.
She has her father’s determination once she makes a decision.
I can only assume that she stood on the overturned laundry basket so that she could reach the shelf where I keep the art supplies.
In the span of minutes, she had acquired the supplies and proceeded to give the floor and walls a new look.
I am ever so grateful for washable art supplies and my sense of humor.
Though I combat the fatigue of keeping up with a high-energy preschooler at my age with humor, I do find that I need to give myself a time-out more often than I did ten years ago.
Here are my top five ways that I award myself with “me time!”
1. A Time Out with Magazines
Everyone has their “thing,” and my thing has always been magazines.
It started as a teenager. I would stay up late at night with a flashlight under the covers, pouring over the latest teen magazine.
As an adult, my obsession has continued.
One of my favorite ways to award myself with me time is still to sneak off with a magazine (or four) in hand.
I recently had some quiet time that was perfect.
I was out running errands and decided that hubby was going to need to watch Skye for a few hours so that I could have some time to unwind. While I was at Tom Thumb, I picked up the latest issues of StyleWatch, Real Simple®, InStyle® and PEOPLE®! In my book, it doesn’t get much better than “me time” with a cup of tea, my favorite tunes and a stack of magazines!
I’ve mentioned that last year my health got off-track and I ended up gaining weight. I got serious about taking it off at the beginning of the year, and have managed to lose 18 pounds!
I’ve always needed a bit of help in the fashion department, so pouring over StyleWatch was the perfect way not only to enjoy some much needed me time but also to get inspired for the new, smaller clothes that I will be buying.
You can visit your local participating Safeway, Jewel-Osco, Vons, Pavilions, Tom Thumb, Randall’s, Shaw’s, Star Market, Carr’s or Acme Market to receive $1 J4U/MyMixx offer on PEOPLE, Instyle, StyleWatch, and Real Simple.
2. 5-Minute Meditation
I am a type-A, and though I understand the benefits of meditation, it is something that I’ve struggled to implement in my life. I realized that part of the issue is that it feels like such a big commitment meditate for 30 minutes.
So I don’t.
Instead, I’ve downloaded an app for my phone, and I’ve been meditating 5 minutes a day. It does wonders to take a little “me-time” in the course of a stressful day and is a great solution when I don’t have time for more.
3. Turn it off
I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to relax when my phone is constantly pinging with emails and social media notifications.
Yes, it is my job to be connected, but this Mama needs a break now and then.
I try to carve out time every week where I completely ignore social media and email. I’ll go for a walk, read a magazine or whip up something in the kitchen just for fun.
4. Have a Laugh
Nothing soothes my mood like laughter.
One of my favorite things to do it to cue up a YouTube clip of a funny show when I’m feeling frazzled. The kids think I’m crazy laughing at my phone, but it works for me.
5. Listen Up!
Sometimes, a girl just needs to close her eyes and zone out.
One of my favorite things to do is to cue up a relaxing playlist and zone out.
So tell me, what you do to relax. Share your Me Time tips below.
