I’ve always loved the outdoors, but never more so than as a Mom. It is always amazing to pull the kids away from their devices and enjoy outdoor adventures, wildlife, and unspoiled beaches. For the last five years, we’ve been lucky enough to escape to the panhandle beaches of Florida. I’ve been a lot of places, but this is my happy place.
If you are looking for outdoor adventures with your family, you owe it to yourself to check out Gulf County, Florida. I think it will become your happy place too. It a place filled with wonder, adventure, and surprise. Encompassing 244 miles of coastline along and around the Florida Panhandle, Gulf County is one of the great places in Florida where nature is undisturbed.
Most years, we arrive at the beach in September and stay through March. While most people think of beach time in the summer, we love it in the fall and winter. The air is cooler, the water is still warm, and the crowds have thinned out considerably. Fall is just perfect, but don’t count winter out! It never gets frigid, and though you may get a few chilly days in the winter, it is still enjoyable. (FYI, I’m from Florida. I think anything below 70 requires a sweater. ) Even in December, you will have many days where you find yourself snapping photos of your kids playing on the beach while your friends up north are shoveling snow!
One reason to love Gulf County Florida is that it has easy access to all kinds of water. Why settle for just the beach when you can enjoy boating, kayaking and more! The Gulf of Mexico, the pristine saltwater St. Joseph Bay, Indian Pass Lagoon, the Gulf Country Canal, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Apalachicola Bay and River Basin and the freshwater of the Dead Lakes and Chipola River are all connected and offer an excellent way to connect with nature. There is so much adventure to be found! There is kayaking, all types of fishing, hiking, bird watching, snorkeling, diving, shelling, paddleboarding, eco-touring and boating all no more than 15 minutes away at any given point in the area. Life never gets dull in Gulf County, and since the activities are nature-based the experiences are never the same twice.
Don’t you just love communities where locals are passionate about their home? With a small-town feel, the locals are friendly and approachable. Don’t be surprised when a stranger says hello on the street!
I love how easy it is to plan an adventure in Gulf County. If I’m in the mood to plan by myself, I can just use the Gulf County Adventure Guide. They also offer help through the Gulf County Concierge Program.
On our next trip, I’m looking forward to tackling some things I’ve never tried in Gulf County.
First off, I want to take the boys snorkeling. This is something I have wanted to do with them for years, and I finally feel like they are strong enough swimmers that I could enjoy myself without worrying. I have a feeling this is an outdoor adventure we will enjoy time and again. Good thing there are so many places in Gulf County explore.
Birds & Wildlife
I also want to get out in nature and explore the birds and wildlife. There is so much to be learned from watching wildlife and all three kids love this! It will be amazing to capture their expressions as they experience new animals they’ve never encountered before. I’m also looking forward to brushing up on my photography skills.
I grew up collecting shells from vacations, but I’ve never had the chance to go shelling in Gulf County. That has to change because many of the beaches have the most amazing shells you can find! The boys are collectors at heart, and I know they would love to join me on this adventure. And of course, Skye would get a kick out of it too. Things we can all do together never fail to bring the family closer!
Which of the adventures in the Adventure Guide would you/your family enjoy taking part in? And why?
