I grew up in the 80’s when fat was the devil, and a low-fat diet was believed to be the key to health. I can remember eating low-fat sugary treats as a teenager thinking I was doing a good thing.
Lately, the buzz has been just the opposite. With books like Eat Fat, Lose Weight, Feel Good: Easy Steps to Health and Happiness and Eat Fat, Get Thin, we are learning more about why we need to stay away from sugar and how important the right fats are in our diet.
Personally, I’ve been experimenting with adding more fats into my diet, and I’ve got to say, thus far I’m impressed. Gone are my cravings and sugar lows. I’ve lost weight, and so has hubby. (He lost 6 pounds in the first three days, without thinking about it or changing any other habits!)
Even if you don’t want to eat a “high” fat diet, there is no doubt that eating the right fats and staying away from the harmful ones (like canola oil) is important – especially for those of us with adrenal and thyroid issues.
One of the most important fats to include in your diet is coconut oil. It is a rich source of medium-chain fatty acids (MCTs), which research shows can help boost your metabolism. It is a fast burning and efficient fuel that can aid in your cognitive function. Additionally, studies show that it can help in belly fat reduction for both men and women.
Since most of us didn’t grow up cooking with coconut oil, I thought I would share some of my favorite coconut oil recipes from around the web. Some of these fall under the “treat” category and may not be ideal when you are trying to lose weight, but for everyone else they are a great way to get healthy fats into your diet!
