Staying healthy for the holidays isn’t always easy! Prepare for the best holiday season ever with these 5 Tips to Stay Heathy This Holiday Season.
I love this time of year, but I don’t always like how all the festivities leave me feeling.
No one loves holiday weight gain, but for the last several years I’ve been more upset with how I felt – exhausted and run down – when January rolled around.
This year, I’ve vowed that I am going to enjoy the holidays, but still make a commitment to doing the things that will have me feeling my best throughout the season and beyond. Here is the plan!
5 Tips to Stay Heathy This Holiday Season
1. Meal Planning
When dinner time rolls around, if I don’t have a plan in place there is a good chance that I will be reaching for something convenient that isn’t healthy as what I would have made otherwise.
Meal planning takes a little time, and this can feel hard to squeeze in during a season that is already so busy.
Making this commitment allows you to indulge when the situation arises, knowing you’ve already got a plan in place to get right back on track with your next meal. Don’t forget to plan for snacks!
I have found that the time I put into planning meals means we eat better and that I spend less time and money during the week. And I sure don’t miss running to the grocery store every day!
2. Weekend Prep
Once I’ve got my menu planned, I look at it and see what I can do ahead of time. It is so easy to cook quinoa and beans on the weekend when I have time. I also like to get all of my vegetables chopped for salads and roast vegetables for side dishes and bowls. It is so much easier to face putting dinner together when you are tired if you have some of the work already started.
3. Drink Your Veggies
Even with planning ahead, I still sometimes struggle to get my daily servings of veggies in. This is especially true on days that I’m on the run with the kids.
I love starting my day with an 8oz serving of V8® Veggie Blends which I pick up at Walmart. Their new V8® Veggie Blends: Caribbean Greens and V8® Veggie Blends: Berry Bliss each offer a serving of vegetables per 8 oz serving. An excellent source of antioxidant vitamin A, C, and E, it is a better way to start my day that sugary orange juice! V8® Veggie Blends are between 60 and 80 calories a serving and contain 75% juice and 25% water. They have no sugar added, no artificial colors, flavors or added preservatives.
Walmart carries V8® Veggie Blends in both 46oz and 12oz sizes. They are an easy and affordable way to help meet your recommended daily intake of veggies. I love the great tasting blend of vegetables and fruit!
I know you saw this one coming. You guys know I struggle when it comes to exercising consistently. The truth is that when things get busy, exercise has been the first thing to go out the window. This time of year, more than ever, it is important to make it a priority. For me, working out first thing in the morning is critical if I want to make sure that my day doesn’t get away from me.
5. Step it Up
Some days when I haven’t slept well (Thanks, Skye!) getting up early to workout just isn’t going to happen. I wear a pedometer and try to get 10,000 steps every day. If I can’t workout, I challenge myself to do more. It drives the kids crazy, but usually, this involves parking as far away from the grocery store as I can and taking the stairs. (Bonus points for carrying a preschooler through a busy parking lot.)
