It is incredible how far a soothing bath can go towards elevating your mood and relaxing your mind.

One of my favorite ways to pamper myself in the tub is by using bath melts.

Homemade bath melts are made with just a few essential ingredients - shea butter, coconut oil, sunflower oil, and your favorite essential oils.

They smell amazing and leave your skin soft and supple. You won't believe how well this easy homemade recipe combats dry skin.

Give these DIY Bath Oil Melts a try in your next hot bath, and I think you will be as hooked as I am.

    What Are Bath Melts?

Bath melts are small bars that contain body butters and essential oils, or other fragrance oil. Unlike bath bombs that fizz, bath melts are more subtle. They typically contain shea butter, cocoa butter, or mango butter. (Or a combination of these.)

The heat of the bath releases the scent and body butters into the bath. The result is a luxurious spa-like experience that is a great way to combat dry skin.

They make your skin feel silky smooth!

Ingredients Needed to Make DIY Bath Melts

Overhead photo of fall essential oils, shea butter, sunflower oil, and coconut oil.
    • Shea Butter: Shea butter is perfect for bath melts because it is so rich and nourishing.
    • Coconut Oil: Use unrefined coconut oil if possible.
    • Sunflower Oil: The purpose of this is to act as a carrier oil for the essential oils. Feel free to use your favorite carrier oil. Sweet almond oil or jojoba oil are also great options.
    • Essential Oils: You can use your favorite essential oils. I used fall essential oils to get in the mood for the season.
    • Dried Flowers: This is optional but a fun way to make these bath melts prettier. I like to coordinate the flours with the scents I am using. Here is used a fall blend, but you could use lavender buds with lavender essential oil or rose petals with rose oil.

Tools Needed To Make this Bath Melt Recipe

    • Double boiler or glass bowl and saucepan
    • Molds - Silicone ice cube trays work great, or you can use something smaller.

    Safety Tip

    • These DIY bath melts are ultra-rich and moisturizing and will leave the tub slippery. Make sure you have a bath mat to step out onto and wipe the tub clean when you are done.

    Fall Bath Melts

DIY bath and body products with seasonal essential oils are one of my favorite ways to enjoy the seasons. Here, I have used Plant Therapy's Fall Essential Oils to get into the spirit of the season.

They smell so delicious, it is hard to decide which I like best. (My two favorites are Maple Bar and Harvest Moon.)

    Scents include:

    • Apple Orchard
    • Autumn Breeze
    • Fall Rain
    • Harvest Moon
    • Maple Bar
    • Pumpkin Spice

Why Shea Butter is Good for Your Skin

Raw Shea Butter nourishes and moisturizes the skin and protects it from environmental damage. It contains Vitamin A, Vitamin E, essential fatty acids and is rich in antioxidants.

Vitamins A and E can help restore skin elasticity, while essential fatty acids offer anti-inflammatory properties.

Shea butter is softer than cocoa butter and has a silky texture that absorbs into the skin.

It is great to use in lotions, balms and soaps as well as recipes like these essential oil bath melts.

It has a nutty aroma that I find much less overpowering than cocoa butter.

In addition to moisturizing skin, shea butter can soothe a sunburn, combat wrinkles, and is suitable for those with skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema.

    Customization and Substitutes

Countless essential oils are beneficial to the skin. I made these with fall essential oils, but your options are limitless! Here are some that you could consider using in this recipe.

    • Geranium
    • Tangerine
    • Lavender
    • Myrrh
    • Neroli

    • Lemon
    • Rose

How to Make DIY Bath Melts - Step by Step Instructions

First, start by melting the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler. If you don't have one (I don't!), just set a glass bowl on top of a pot of hot water.

While the shea butter mixture is melting, combine the sunflower oil and essential oils in a small dish.

Remove the shea butter from the stove and pour in the essential oils and carrier oil. Stir well to disperse the oil mixture.

Transfer the mixture to silicone molds and place on a cookie sheet or tray. Refrigerate until solid.

If your home is on the warmer side, you will want to store these bath melts in the fridge until you are ready to use.
