If you’ve been here long, you know that I try to keep things as natural as I can.
My first awareness that our actions could impact our longevity was when I was in college and my grandfather died of throat cancer.
There is no doubt in my mind that his cancer was brought on by environmental conditions and personal choices.
When I became a mom, I became even more concerned.
We changed our diet, and turned to natural healing when possible.
But lately, something has been weighing on me.
You see, in the last three years, I've watched three women I know - moms that were my age with children - lose their battle with cancer.
It was time for the toxic makeup and skin care that I allowed in because "a little couldn't hurt" (since I was doing so well elsewhere) to go!
Putting chemicals that are known to disrupt hormones and are linked to cancer on my face and body every day isn’t the example that I want to be setting for Skye.
As I started to read more about environmental toxins in our home and I realized that even the “natural” shampoo, conditioner, body wash, mascara and sunscreen that I was using had questionable ingredients.
The truth is that while I love to make DIY products, with three kids sometimes there isn’t enough time.
But I knew I had to do something....
It is clear that we can't count on our government to protect us.
According to the Skin Deep Study:
(Source: Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry)
So often we see the words Natural, Pure, Clean or Gentle on products and we just assume they are safe. Unfortunately, natural doesn't mean safe and synthetic doesn't mean harmful.
According to Skin Deep 80% of products have at least one hidden hazard THAT ISN’T LISTED ON THE LABEL.
Did You Know That...
So many of us deliberate so hard over what we eat, but when it comes to skin and beauty products all that caution goes out the window.
When you put chemicals on your skin it can absorb and enter your bloodstream and circulatory system - sometimes within a matter of seconds.
Many experts now believe that what you put on your skin is more important than what you eat in terms of your toxic load.
(This makes sense - the toxins in our food are filtered by our liver. What we put on our skin immediately goes into our bloodstream.)
The truth is for me, it wasn’t just that I was making bad choices. It is just that until now I’ve struggled to find a complete line of products using non-toxic ingredients that ACTUALLY WORKED.
I am excited to share what I’ve learned with you and to educate and inspire you to make safer choices!
Researchers at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health published a study in 2013 that detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals in many popular brands of lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores. The study also noted that children are especially susceptible to heavy metal accumulation and should not play with make up.
Think of all the young girls that apply make-up daily or even multiple times a day!
I want better for my daughter! (And I know you do too!)

Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues (including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it's in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home.
What's worse is the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids every single day, day after day.
At Beautycounter, we've banned more than 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard— all while ensuring our products perform, and that they're as indulgent as any luxe shampoo, lipstick or oil in the market.
I didn’t only fall in love with Beautycounter because their products are safer and high performing, but I wanted to work with a company that is working towards real change. Beautycounter is dedicated to making changes on the legislative level and creating a safe skin care movement. They are taking action in Washington and working to reform the current laws, in hopes that other skin care companies will follow their strict safety guidelines. They also work very closely to support 3 non-profit organizations that are doing great work to reduce our amount of chemical exposure.

Beautycounter is dedicated to product performance, just as much as they are to product safety. After trying countless non-toxic cosmetic brands, I can tell you that this combination of safer ingredients and products that work is extremely rare.
Some natural cosmetic brands use only 100% organic ingredients. This is as pure as makeup can get, but often, the performance is lacking. While Beautycounter uses both synthetic and organic ingredients, they never compromise on the safety of the ingredients. Beautycounter has developed a groundbreaking and rigorous ingredient screening process, looking for data on skin irritation, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, cumulative exposure (are we exposed to this chemical from other sources) and more.
Every single Beautycounter product is listed on EWG’s Skindeep database, which is my go-to resource for researching product safety!
These products work exceptionally well and are comparable to the luxurious brands I was using from department stores and high-end spas. Except, they are void of all the harsh chemicals. My skin has honestly never looked better!
I haven’t tried a Beautycounter product that I didn’t love!
