This Ninja Creami Milkshake is the perfect diner milkshake. It is thick, cold, and just creamy enough to sip with a spoon. Four ingredients, a frozen pint, and the Creami does the work. It tastes like the vanilla shake you'd get out, except you made it at home. My boys took one sip and started planning to make it again.

My boys always order milkshakes as dessert when we go out. When I first tested this recipe, I knew I was on to something. They both looked at me and said "wow" at the same time. We now keep a pint of vanilla in the outside freezer at all times for when the milkshake craving strikes.

The Creami Makes the BEST Milkshakes at Home
You can make a milkshake with a blender, but the Creami works better.
With a blender, the ice cream is hard, so you add milk. Sometimes it doesn't blend, so you add more milk, and suddenly it's too thin. The Creami was built to get through frozen ice. The blade easily softens ice cream. No need to add more milk than you want to get it moving.
The Vanilla Milkshake
One batch fills the pint and pours into two 8 ounce glasses. It's thick, but not spoon-thick. It's a straw shake, but with some thickness.
Don't skip the salt. You won't taste salt. It just keeps the sweetness from going flat.
Use whole milk. The fat adds richness. Skim will work, but it is not as good. And if you want it even richer, half and half is nice.
If you’d like to make this dairy free, I’d recommend dairy free ice cream and canned coconut milk.
Pick Your Starting Point
Store-bought ice cream. If you want to make this without planning ahead, a ice cream from the store works just fine.
A Creami pint. This is what I do, with my Ninja Creami Vanilla. One recipe of my Creami vanilla is the exact amount you need to make this recipe.
Adjusting Thickness
- Spoon-thick: Reduce the Milk to ¼ cup.
- Straw-thick: Make as written.
- Drinkable, the easy-sipping kid version: Increase to ¾ cup milk.
Mixing Up Flavor
- Chocolate: Swap vanilla ice cream for chocolate ice cream, and add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder.
- Strawberry: vanilla or strawberry ice cream, ⅓ cup milk plus ¼ cup strawberries, fresh or thawed frozen. The fruit adds liquid, so start with less milk.
- Cookies and cream: vanilla ice cream, ½ cup whole milk, crushed chocolate sandwich cookies.
- Peanut butter banana: vanilla ice cream, ½ cup milk, 2 tablespoon peanut butter and ½ a ripe banana.
Make it a protein shake
You can turn this into a post-workout shake without losing the milkshake feel. Add a scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder to the pint with the milk, before you run the setting. Protein powder soaks up liquid, we add more ¾ cup milk to keep it pourable.
