For a deliciously indulgent breakfast ideal for leisurely weekend mornings, Blackstone French Toast is perfect. The fluffy center of the bread is surrounded by a lightly crispy crust just waiting to be topped with your favorite syrup or fruit compote. It is a sweet start that will make any day a little better!
To me, french toast is the kind of dish you linger over at your favorite cafe, wondering, "Why don't I make this at home?"
For me, it has always been more of a brunch-out kind of food. What I've found is that making French toast on the Blackstone griddle is unbelievably easy because you can cook all of the French toast on the griddle in one go.
Plus, making your own Blackstone griddle French toast gives you full control over the texture and flavor. You can pick the kind of bread, level of sweetness and add your favorite spices.
This way, every bite is exactly as you love it —perfectly seasoned, with just the right amount of sweetness and a texture that melds crispy edges with a tender, custardy middle.
Truly, the best way to kickstart your day!
Ingredients
- Eggs: I used large eggs, but any size will do.
- Half and Half: If you're looking for a lighter option, consider using whole milk or for a non-dairy version, almond or oat milk can be wonderful substitutes.
- Brown Sugar gives a lovely hint of molasses and depth. If you're out or looking for a twist, a splash of maple syrup could do the trick.
- Vanilla Extract: If you have it, vanilla bean paste is also lovely here.
- Ground Cinnamon: Adds a touch of spicy sweetness. You can experiment with nutmeg or pumpkin spice for a seasonal twist.
- Sea Salt: Just a pinch enhances all the flavors. Kosher salt is an easy substitution here.
- Bread: There are so many great options:
- White Bread: Light and fluffy, a classic choice. My bread machine, white bread, works great for this recipe.
- Brioche: Buttery and rich, it takes this dish to another level of indulgence. Try my bread machine brioche.
- Sourdough: The tangy notes can add a delightful complexity.
- Texas Toast: For those who love their breakfast extra thick and hearty.
- Challah: Its slight sweetness and texture are perfect for soaking up the egg mixture.
- Butter for cooking: Coconut oil or ghee are great alternatives.
Toppings
- Maple Syrup or Honey: Sweet, natural options to drizzle on top.
- Yogurt: For a tangy contrast, especially nice with Greek yogurt.
- Powdered Sugar and Whipped Cream: For an extra special treat.
- Blueberry or Strawberry Compote and/or Berries: Fresh or cooked berries add a beautiful freshness. Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are all great options.

Tips and Tricks
- Temperature Mastery: Your Blackstone griddle will have unique hot spots. If you're new to using a griddle, consider starting at a slightly lower temperature than recommended. You can then gradually increase the temperature as you become more familiar with your griddle's behavior. Your griddle temperature for french toast should stay fairly low - it is easy to burn!
- Even Coating is Key: Ensuring each slice of bread is evenly coated with the egg mixture is crucial for that perfect, custard-like center. Don't rush this step; allow the bread to fully soak up the goodness for the recommended 15 minutes.
- Don't Flip Too Soon: Wait until the first side is golden brown before flipping. Rushing this can cause the French toast to break or stick to the griddle.
Storing
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. They will keep for up to three days.
I like to freeze leftovers for easy weekday breakfasts. To do this, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag and store for up to three months. You can redhead them in the microwave or in a toaster oven.
