What are Street Tacos?
Street tacos are smaller, flavorful variations of traditional tacos that are inspired by the tacos enjoyed in Mexican street food markets.
The most obvious difference between regular tacos and street tacos is their size. Street tacos are much smaller, which makes them a great on-the-go options.
Street tacos typically use thinner corn tortillas (sometimes two) and have fewer ingredients than traditional tacos.
Street taco fillings can range from beef or chicken to chorizo or vegetables, ensuring everyone can find something delicious to enjoy!
Ingredients
- Steak: You can use most any grilling steak to make Mexican steak tacos. I recommend skirt steak, flank steak, or hanger steak.
- Oil: Use a high-heat oil. Avocado oil is my go-to.
- Soy Sauce: I most often use regular soy sauce, but gluten-free tamari or coconut aminos are also a great options.
- Lime Juice: Fresh squeezed will have the most flavor, but you can use bottled if you have it on hand.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This adds a fantastic umami flavor to the marinade.
- Cumin: Adds smoky, earthy notes to the tacos.
- Chili Powder: I use regular chili powder, but you could also use ancho chili powder for a mild heat that won't overpower the steak.
- Garlic Powder: This gives all the flavor of garlic with minimal effort. If you like, you could use two cloves garlic, minced.
- Salt and Pepper: Adjust the amount to your liking.
- Tortillas: You can find street taco tortillas at most grocery stores. Either corn or flour work. If you are watching carbs, lettuce wraps are a great option.
- Cilantro: This adds a nice burst of flavor.
- Limes: Finish with a squeeze of fresh lime juice.
- Toppings: Although street tacos typically have minimal toppings, feel free to add your favorites.

Make the Steak Street Taco Marinade
First, start by placing the steak in a shallow dish.
Whisk together the oil, soy sauce, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Pour the marinade over the steak and allow to at room for an hour or refrigerate for up to four hours. I don’t recommend marinating for more than four hours, unless you omit the lime juice.
Grilled Tacos
When ready to cook, heat the grill to medium-high heat.
Brush the grates with oil and place the steaks on the grill. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through. (For medium rare; actual time will depend on the shape and thickness of the steak.)
Remove from heat and allow to rest for at least 5 minutes.
Ninja Foodi Grill Tacos
Heat your Foodi Grill to medium. When the grill is preheated, add the steaks. Cook for 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Remove from the heat, and allow to rest on a cutting board.
Blackstone Steak Tacos
Heat the Blackstone gr to medium-high heat (400 °F to 450°F). Oil the griddle and then add the steaks.
Cook for 5 minutes and then flip, cook an additional 4 minutes or to desired doneness. Remove from heat, and allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Assembly
After the steak has rested, it should be thinly sliced against the grain. Heat the tortillas until warmed through, about 1 minute per side.
Add the steak to the tortilla and top with cilantro, chopped onion, a squeeze of lime juice, and your desired toppings.
Pro Tip: If you want to marinate your steak overnight, I recommend omitting the lime juice and then adding it shortly before you cook. Marinating meat in citrus for more than four hours can cause it to become tough.
